10055 no buffer space available :(

Post by l0l »

Windows98 newspro 3.6, about 512mb mem, around 20gb free disk space.

Been running newspro for quite a long time now.

Just recently started recieving alot of 10055 errors "no buffer space available".

Been using newsfeeds.com for longer than I've been using newspro.

Error starts to appear after running for an hour or more on article downloads. If I restart newspro, It will disapear for a while then return.
Only started about a week ago. Upgraded to 3.6 to see if that would cure
the problem, but to no avail. Any ideas?

the error comes from inside winsock, usually it is caused by third party software that takes over winsock like firewall. try to uninstall the firewall and check whether it occurs then (just disabling it won't help since its drivers then will still remain in place).

Yes, it is a computer-specific error. I've had this happen when running NewsPro for a long period of time, but in reality it is not NewsPro at all because I have had it happen many more times when just leaving my computer on for a long period of time overall.

You'll notice when you get this error that other programs will produce the error as well. For example my mail program gives the same error if this is occurring on my computer. IE cannot retrieve pages and I appear to have no Internet access.

Rebooting the computer gives it a fresh start.

Thank you all for your replies. I am using (and have been for a couple years) BlackIce. But only in the last week have I been getting this error.
Strange.

Due to a bad iphlpapi.dll, I did have to uninstall IE 5.5 SP2 (reverting to 4), then reinstal it. Only other install / upgrade I performed around this time.

And yes, your right. Once I get the error, it starts appearing in other proggies as well. A reboot does clear it out.

I'm open to other ideas as well, if anyone has them.

Thanks!

Overall, I found that NewsPro is quite a good stresstest for a computer. If there is a problem with memory, firewall etc NewsPro will show some behaviour.
I'd recommend that you go from Win98 to XP. The gain is stability is incredible since it's coming from NT. The other thing yould be firewall: I fixed a lot of problems when I switched to the "Outpost" Free firewall. But this is NOT a general thing. On some computers this FW crashes like MAD. On mine it works.

try to reinstall the firewall, given it started to happen at some point maybe it will help, complete deinstall and reinstall, unless it is something deeper in the system, in win98 the system files aren't protected from inconsistencies so well as in winxp.

Tried several solutions, including backing out any/all system or program mod's in the last 2 weeks. Even reinstalled complete OS partion from a month ago via ghost backup (prior to problem). Problem still persists. Don't want to go to XP since I still have many old dos programs / games 'n such I still enjoy and have heard heartackes galore about XP and old dos. Did try running with firewall software totaly down, still get the 10055's. It is interesting that the problem (once established)then affects just about all other IP related programs and won't go away until a reboot. Have multiple backups and can restore quite easily to any previous state OS and/or program state. Backup restores used to save me all the time. bummer

Still open to any ideas ya got.

It is similar to a memory error but for networking instead. If a program fills up your memory and doesn't release some of it then you end up with less and less available until instability results. This network error is the same thing basically, something has used buffer send/receive space and then hasn't freed it up for use. Eventually you have no space left and nothing can access network resources.

I've had this error occasionally but without any common link between occurances that I can tell. I'm certainly sure NewsPro isn't a cause on my machine, though I have had it happen when NewsPro ran for a long period while downloading. It is related to something else, however, and it only came up with NewsPro simply because so much bandwidth and threads were being utilized.

I think you all have helped clairify the problem very well.
Have any idea where to get an IP buffer cleaner ?
Perhaps using a pipe cleaner and reaming every IP port
I have  ?

Another thing, try this:
http://security.kolla.de/
Spybot search and destroy. I had myself some weird DLL's that were interfering even after de-installing the shareware is question. Delete all the things Spybot finds in RED. Then reboot and try again.

no, the article is not relevant, newspro sends something more or less significant only when posting and in fact it doesn't send large buffers even then.

most probably it isn't caused by microsoft, again uninstalling firewall temporarily to find out whether it is responsible could help, i strongly suspect you won't experience the problem then.

Complete uninstall of BI firewall software. Newspro launched, after 'bout hour 1/2 10055s came upon me again. ah well, it was worth a try.

Still open to ideas.

Ah hi :
When all else is tried an to no avail , maybe you could try this . Unsubscribe from a few newsgroups then see what happens . As time goes by I add newsgroups as the need arises . until one day strange things start happening , removing a few sometimes helps . But this a real long shot as it really has no connection to server side messages .
