how to best hide data transport via usenet for other people?

with speeds the data is not so consistent, in my example in that particular moment NGroups on one computer was still faster than UNS on another computer, although in the same time in both cases it was slower than UNS on the same computer.

what we need is data from users of different ISPs, then we can decide on average speed of access from a specific location, with too much power of advertising the picture might easily get distorted.

would be nice to have a monitoring program for the downloadspeed.
I have DU meter, but does not seem to measure the speed, because maybe is does not look at the ssl port.

Anyway it looks like the speed is much better than the first day. Usually it is above 800, but a lot of time it is at the max of the isp i have, so what i had with other pay servers.

I recommend BitMeter II. It has some nice statistics such as hourly, daily and monthly. It's pretty comprehensive and shows the average speed during the periods mentioned above. It's freeware but more feature rich than most payware I've researched. As I said - highly recommended. Check the screenshots. The third one down (on the right) shows the window I use a lot to check statistics. I use the calculator a lot as well. It's such a handy piece of software.

thanks for the bitmeter II tip. Nice software, and for free.

looks better than du meter and it displays the download via ssl.

I forgot to mention that BitMeter has full CSV export so should you need to, you can export the data and manipulate it for better display of the statistics. I still can't believe I read through so many sites for payware, believing that they would be better options than freeware that is just simply better.

I am using 2 dutch servers with SSL together on highest priority with UE, I notice that some threads now sometimes hanging on both servers (sometimes a lot) (without SSL it’s fine).
When retry failled article task sets on every 3 min and connect delay on 200s, the threads are going again after some time.(sometimes 1 keeps hanging)
Because the prob is on different servers the same, I ask myself wat can be the problem ?
Any advice ?

(sorry bad english) grtz

Damn, I just did a trace and the route is the same on both servers (same ip range)
That’s why it’s a prob on both servers…damn
(I have a blockaccount on Usenet-News , going to test if there is also a problem there)

edit
No problems with hanging threads on Usenet-News with SSL, it’s a server problem, in my case 2 :x

Usenetserver

Post by chili »

I've been using Usenetserver (secure) in the US for a while.
On a single connection I usually get like 300KB/s. That goes up, per, thread, until Comcast(ic) throttles me at 800KB/s.

So it's fairly cheap and I can't benefit from any faster anyway.

The only complaint I have is that I'm just now catching up on a couple 50mil plus groups. I downloaded all headers (100days+) and am looking through them oldest to newest. After a week or so, I'm now looking at around day 40. Some articles I download are giving errors as 'article not available' - even though I only got it through them, and it's well within their retention. This is perhaps 5-10% of the messages I am looking at at this stage. I don't understand why this is so.

I have not tried to rescan, but I hope it will be better once I get more current with the groups.

Yes, I know, it is the problem with UNS right now.

I told them already several times, the last time I didn't get a response, maybe they missed my email since it was response to an old ticket.

NGroups also employing directly the UNS server.

Maybe try to contact their support, the idea is to run UE, download headers and then download all bodies in the newsgroup (pressing space), but not to save anything.

Then on those messages which don't have bodies they'll see half body icon with question sign.

They told me first it is some problem only towards the end of retention, indeed I saw it about 114 days while their retention is 115 or 117 but then I saw the same problem with a 97 day old article.

Users need to bombard their support with complaints until the problem is fixed, it is a server bug, namely the server message-id index get corrupted.

Now i found a usenet server in holland with ssl for free (maybe only works when you are in holland?)

http://www.xsnews.nl/Abonnementen/Abonn ... aAodPGVs2Q

7.95 euro per month for 10 mbit/sec does not seem to much money.

So maybe this is also an indication that more servers with ssl will appear in the future.
