Search timeout (external en route connectivity problem)

03 Oct 23: One server has been relocated, the server currently doesn't have a public IP address in the meantime. I wrote some additional tunnel code running separately to handle this. When the server is engaged the connection is 5600+ days uniform (since around 24 July 2008). In the unlikely case I disengaged the server because of some problem the retention is 1200-3800 days depending on newsgroup. If you experience any issue please let me know.

29 Nov 23: Because of encrypted and "obfuscated" flood mass posted by few nzb websites and newzbin-like communities using usenet servers as private storage for their members to download the posts - the situation with the content is pretty chaotic, since posts are disguised in such a way, that users must use the satellite ecosystem (whish is not a part of Usenet) exclusively to download them, when the website disappears - the encrypted scattered posts just eat usenet providers' disk space uselessly. If you can't find something specific please let me know what exactly you can't find for me to check how it is possible to retain the posts. Legible posts shouldn't be affected at all, let me know if you notice anything missing.

08 Aug 24: After being unchanged for many years the search service communication protocol had to be updated a few times in part to resolve a server side set feature limitation and properly handle trial searches on the relocated server. The searches themselves are not affected and it looks like the work is now complete.

Search timeout (external en route connectivity problem)

Post by dito »

Hello, im using UsenetExplrorer V1.9.9 Registered

Up until an hour ago my search just stopped doing anything, its not even displaying any error messages, when i hit the search button it just turns to cancel and it stays there forever, i have been searching packages all day long and it was working fine.

Thanks for any info

Search is working fine for me. I searched for a couple of things about two hours ago and that worked fine also. Maybe it's just a temporary glitch in the routing to you.

i don't see any problem, maybe it was some general connectivity issue with your isp.

i would see it as well a difference in a number of search requests if it would be just a local issue at the server side or even one server isp, i don't see any difference.

now i'll record the time of my post to see whether the frequency was the same at the time of your post.

an hour ago, i see nothing, looks like connectivity, some route from your computer got congested.

sometimes on my connection (server is not here :) ) i see access to some sites is very slow or giving timeout and other sites all ok, those with timeout may be even local sites which physically are much closer.

it still doesn't work? you can try to use a proxy.

if you define a local proxy in UE i think searches will go through it then.

edit menu->properties->proxies, on the left is local proxy, the right access proxies the checkbox above the list control just keep unchecked.

there are lists of free proxies around, maybe socks5 is better.

try to make telnet to ... (check your pm messages).

you should see something like greek letter pi and smiling face, do you see that at least with one of them.

i'll pm you telnet to check first, one doesn't work or both?

here is a working proxy (works right now for me).

218.5.18.131 3128

select Socks5

http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html

but not proxies there are working there and i'm not sure it is legal (it is in china). searches are encrypted, so no problem to use it through any channel.

does it work through "local" proxy?

don't forget to uncheck the proxy when it will stop working or connectivity restored.

this particular proxy is strange, i entered it in browser and tried to http://www.google.com or http://64.233.187.99 even https to check how google china censors results - the proxy doesn't work through browser.

but for search it works ok.

Both of us are having the same problem.

I tried to telnet to the ip/ports you PMed and it did connect, just returned some weird characters, enter disconnected.

The proxy listed above did not work for search (unless I set it up in the wrong spot) went to Properties>Proxies.

Access proxies was not checked, I checked local proxies and entered 218.5.18.131 3128 and selected Socks5.

Anything else I can try or you want tested?

Thanks in advance,
John

what characters? greek letter PI an smiling face?

are you sure both returned that?

if you look for \"dog\" (including backslashes and double quote signs) do you get the only result? (to see it is not slowness)

Yes, both servers returned the Pi and smiley face.

\"dog\" did return results 3 from alt.binaries.buzzard and 1 from alt.binaries.dvd.movies

Other searches are still just hanging.

so it is connectivity, not clear to which server.

it doesn't hang, just slow.

i checked here the upload bandwidth is ok do it is not local server connection problem.

also searches go ok right now, something along route from your location is slowing things down.
