Quick Question About SSL

Today I signed yo for the Diamond Package on Giganews (they have a special thats actually cheaper than the package I had.)

Anyway,
I checked these forums and I think I just confused the hell out of myself about SSL

Does UE now have native support for SSL?
Is it as simple as checking the SSL check box and changing the port to 563?

I have read the posts about using stunnel. (preferring not to have to use it
if I do not have to)


Thanks for any help.

(BTW I did try stunnel and it did not work for me nor did simply checking the SSL box and changing the port so it may be that giganews has not upgraded my account as yet)

yes.

you need to use settings which are stated by the usenet provider, e.g. the secure server name may differ from the regular one.

check out it is not only one month savings after which the price will be higher than your old account, giganews is quite capable with such tricks.

Did you ever get this to work?

I am thinking of switching to SSL (w. Giganews), but I can wait if it is still requiring stunnel.

However, if it is just selecting SSL in UE, changing the port, and perhaps selecting a different server, then that is OK.

I've been using it with no problem at all. Server name is the same. In Usenet Explorer, set the server port to 443 and check SSL. Remember to adjust your firewall rules if needed.

Alex is correct, the first month is cheaper then the Platinum, but it does go to 29.95 after the first month. Remember you get 20 active tasks with the Diamond instead of 10 with the Platinum, so it does speed things up a bit too. To me, the 10 extra connections is worth the $5 a month, the SSL is just a bonus.

What about download speed? I understand it is a bit slower when downloading through SSL.

That's something I've never tested. I've heard different things. With the 20 connections it's seems faster.
