searchgroup and detach server (which has strict enabled)

Post by DDX »

i have 2 newsservers :

newszilla.xs4all.nl with priority 128 and Strict enabled
news.astraweb.com with priority 60

both servers have msg-id direct enabled

now i create an seachgroup

#group1

which has an xpath search on the newsgroup alt.binaries.dvd

since xs4all doesn't have this group I detached newszilla.xs4all.nl from this 'newsgroup'

but it still tries to download all the articles from newszilla.xs4all.nl

when I disable msg-id direct on newszilla.xs4all.nl it stops trying to download

is there a way to leave msg-id direct on (for other searchgroups)
but disable it on the current searchgroup ?

You can click on the plus (+) sign in front of #group1, click right on newszilla and detach the newsserver, easy as that..

AFAIK, the enable/disable message-ID on a specific server is a global setting, and cannot be applied per newsgroup. You might try losing the Strict setting on the newszilla server and giving the astraweb server a higher priority (if that fits into your overall scheme). It won't necessarily eliminate the newszilla server's trying to download the articles, but it might increase efficiency.

downoading articles settings (like message-id direct) are applied cross-group, otherwise the border would be somewhat uncertain (e.g. an article could belong to several newsgroups with different settings).

also the delay/bandwidth price of misses is small, given the conveyer-like, sequential nature of the queue (if you want to do it because astraweb more complete than the isp server) if the isp server has available article task slots.
