UE took a long time to load after a blue screen

Post by iliasgr »

I had a blue screen today due to a faulty driver. At the time of the BS I was getting headers for a group. When I came back up, I ran UE and it took a long time to load (perhaps 10 minutes or so). It usually takes 15-20 seconds to load normally. I was very surprised by this, I thought that it had gotten stuck. I also noticed very heavy disk activity during all this time UE was loading.

So, my question is: why did it take that long? It came back up alright, and everything seems to be ok. Was UE doing some sort of db integrity check and/or repair?

it was probably synchronizing bodies, if the bodies index file has been damaged it gets header info for damaged entries from article bodies on the disk and accessing many files may be slow. it writes what it is doing in the small message box with the progress bar which is shown during start.

it is better than if it started fast but ended with a lot of garbage on the disk.

you can also sometimes delete unused bodies in edit menu->global filter (the less is the number of bodies the faster the restoring will be), then press "body" in the quick filter bar and delete what you don't need (the program can also be set to delete bodies automatically upon save even after errors not related to full disk or disk write errors, read properties->articles, saving attachments, the ? sign button).
