Header Downloading Problem

Post by juneman »

Whenever I attempt to get the headers for any specific range, or retention from a very large newsgroup, it'l quit out when it's not done, then when I click to get new headers again and it'l continue from that point, but it'l eventually get to a point where it's still not done, and when I click get new headers, the command shows up in the taskbar only for a split second and goes away, the strange thing though, is that it gets a tiny bit each time I do this, like 10 headers.. So it's not like it's got everything.., I also know this as it isn't up to date, for example only went up to March 5th last time. I've tried changing the header range / the retention making it both or just one on it's own.. right now, my current settings are as follows in the newsgroups tab under options:

Initial or auto load mode: Unload
Initial filter: None
Retention/Dates: 15d
Headers per server [range]: All
the rest: Delete
Sort by: Persist
Threads: Yes
Reclaim Purged Headers: No

Any help will be greatly appreciated,
thanks.

it might be some problem with the server, e.g. if the server indicates that it returned all headers which you are requested UE will remember the server header range as done.

the size of the newsgroup doesn't matter as well, so check for example whether all works for news.microsoft.com, some large newsgroup like xp general.

if server changed article numbering then you need to reset header range for the server (in the newsgroup/server advanced submenu menu in the workspace you can see / reset header range).

also if you limit retention and it takes too long probably it also makes sense to set "headers per server" to approximately equal to the retention so scanning for the matching date will be faster since in the nntp protocol there is no way to get headers by retention (i think it is mentioned in UE.txt)

but all the matter is very transparent, just check numbers for the newsgroup/server pair in the same advanced submenu->header range properties and verify them after every header download, if you see any irregularities cite the numbers here if you cannot explain them yourself.

e.g. server if the server header range (these are just "local" article numbers - specific for this particular server and the newsgroup) is 100-10000 and you download last 1000 headers the program header range would become something around 9000-10000

usually you won't find such extensive header download options anywhere (which also means you can troubleshoot any such problem in detail instead of reporting it in vague terms :) ) since all now is shifting towards direct access like nzb and search with content disproportionally distributed over relatively few newsgroups.

hmm.. so all you really suggest doing is setting the headers to the approximate amount given when set on retention? Didn't work.. it also happens on other newsgroups, happens only on the big ones.. any other suggestions? I've tried randomly changing MANY settings, changing them back after of course, but I haven't made any real progress yet, thanks for your help though alex, if you think of anything else let me know, or anyone else too.. TIA

do you understand what is the server specific article number which is assigned to every newsgroup header?

there are not many related settings, you need to check what happens with header range in header range properties for given newsgroup-server pair.

in the workspace expand the newsgroup, select the server, then in the context menu->advanced->header range properties.

you may reset header range (in the same menu) then try to download headers and check how it changes every time (both server header range and UE database header range).

you can email me your server credentials (what server?) with description what exactly to do i could check it here, but resetting the header range (or resetting newsgroup, but then existing headers will be removed) causes the program to download all headers again, so if the server has changed article numbering it will be fixed with the reset.
