Hi,
I have done some major updates with my computer and software, and as a last thing I would also like to get UE working again. I am running UE through Wine on a Gentoo Linux system. Everything looks ok superficially until I want to download with UE.
A header download often does not even start (although a few bytes are getting sent), but when it starts it will most of the time freeze at some percentage less than 100%. I have tried header reset, rescan, etc. without success. I have switched off the proxy and tried to connect directly without success. It seems that body downloads are still working ok. Everything was working fine 2-3 weeks ago. Now I am lost where to look for the error:
1) The updated Wine version (updated from 0.9.12 or 0.9.14 to 0.9.15)?
2) The updated UE version (latest one 1.52)?
3) Some change at the newsserver?
I am not sure where to start. I can down-date the Wine version, but I did not keep the old UE versions. Has anything changed in UE over the last 3 weeks that yould affect the connection with the newserver? Is there any adjustment (e.g. connect delay, ... ?) that may help for these situations?
Thank you.

Wine problem or something else?
maybe it is news server? temporary problem?
try news.microsoft.com they have a relatively large newsgroups you could try to download headers from. do you see the same problem?
if bodies download works ok headers also should work from the point of program internals.
i didn't change anything in the program itself or compiler, i could email you an earlier version just tell which one but mostly likely the result will be the same (but try the microsoft server first.
as to vista adjustments in some recent version also nothing, on start UE just hides the quick filter and search service bar while making window resizing since vista had a bug in earlier betas which otherwise caused it to send continous paint messages bringing processor usage to 100% and even stalling the program at some point, it is all).

if you (or someone else) could write a one page or whatever description how to install UE under linux i could add it to the UE website.
for example someone told me that the best working browse for folder dialog is custom (newspro like, it is windows independent) and the rest have problems (at least the modified one) and otherwise the program runs well.
i'll check it myself eventually, but for some more time i'll be busy with other issues, in the end i'll try to install linux on another computer.

I installed Ubuntu Linux a while agon and it worked ok.
A new option in Ubuntu i found out was to install VMware (freely download from within Ubuntu). Then there is an option to install for example windows xp professional. (If wanted i can check out the details of that VMware install etc.)
So you start up the computer with ubuntu and then run windows xp inside of Ubuntu. Now you can install windows xp programs.
Unfortunately i had to reinstall windows because the computer had serious problems. But when i have some time, i will install Ubuntu again and then install VMware, and then windows xp and then ue.
If someone is interested i will give more details then.
