big problem installing/re-installing

Post by netfan »

Hello,

I was downlaoding from newsgroups while I was noticing, that I get an error message: more the 10 connections opend. This was a notice from my newsprovider.
I checked my newsreader and could not understand why - there was no other UE instance running. UE was giving me erro messages more and more.
I shut down my computer, restarted it and started UE.
Now UE was acting as I wanted to install a new version or wanted to install UE the first time. UE was asking for my downloadfolder etc.

I delete the UE folder (what was left in my system) - installed UE new and I noticed that I did not had to put in my RegKey - o.k. so far BUT NOW: Usually if I install UE I see the following folders like Bodies, Downloads, Import etc. but now : NOTHING AT ALL.

I dond know what happend and I do not know whats happening now - I have done it over and over again - no change.

There is enough space on the HD left for UE.

Can someone please tell me what I have to do to DELETE UE completely also all entries in the system and deeper where ever this might be (regestry)? So to speak: a totally new installation as I would have had never installed UE.

Please be easy on me while explaining, english is not my mother toung.
Thanks in advance!

too many connections is not UE problem, it might be a server problem or a problem with software below application level like third party firewall which doesn't execute closesocket call properly.

you can use netstat from the command prompt to list the connections.

if you see too many connections opened try to run UE on a clean system or disable/temporarily uninstall firewall etc. to see if the number drops,

closesocket is asynchronous function, it means connections might be closed a bit later after actual call, there is an option in properties->servers to set connection delay, then a new connection will be opened with delay so previously closed connection will have more chance to close, if you set connection delay also better to keep properties->general->keep alive checked (it is default), so there will be no wasting time on delays by reducing the number of connects.

but in short no need to reinstall UE since it won't change anything in this regard.

as to settings etc directory, if you don't remember where UE database directory is try to look for those directories like "settings" on your hard drive and point UE to the upper directory of the "settings" directory. use properties->general->database folder, change to switch to the old directory.

You may just need to reset the number of connections allowed in the prefferences. Actually think it is called Max Tasks.

Hello,

thanks for getting back to me.

I changed the General - settings "Keep alive" and activated it.

Also after going to General "Database Folder" I have noticed that it pointed in a total different path than it sould be -so something must have happend real bad.

Now, thanks for my backups, I have all things running well again.

Usualy I let things the way if all is running well.
But can someone give me mayby a hint to what to set up in the "Task" filed?
There are sooo many things I have no knowledge about.

I am running DSL 16.000 (with a real 1 MB/sec download from my Newsprovider) and usaully 10 connections. Mayby this will help prevent another problem.

Anyway, thanks for all the input

in edit menu->properties->tasks->total tasks you can set the total number of tasks (and so connections), if it is more than allowed by the server this is the cause.

in edit menu->properties->servers, connect delay, you can set connect delay (on per server basis).

or you can try both, connect delay+total tasks say 8 instead of 10 to see if it helps.

also check the potential firewall issues with netstat.

ue keeps starting path in the registry HCU->Software->Usenet Explorer if i remember right, otherwise the program doesn't use registry so something messed with your windows registry then, maybe antivirus?

You can typically max your bandwidth with one or two connections, and efficiently maintain maximum bandwidth at all times by using just three connections.

10 connections would generally not be needed, and will make any other Internet related tasks on your computer go even slower due to more open connections.
