Where I am, this time of the year I get a lot of dropped connections on my DSL(thanks centurytel) & I either have to wait about 5(or more) minutes or close UE to be able to continue reading groups. The DSL comes back up quick, but I can't get UE to reconnect. I have tried canceling tasks, clearing errors, reloading headers multiple times in a row, clicking on msg.'s all to no avail. Is there an easy way to cause UE to reconnect? This is almost as irritating as centurytel's service.(when it thunders, I lose my ppp connection?). Any help is greatly appreciated. I own a registered copy of UE.
Thanks.
Dropped connection-hard to reconnect
maybe it has something to do with the firewall.
do you see connections in the relevant running pane (the green computer icon pane in the view menu->task manager)?
connections are normally should be closed immediately with the lost of connectivity but in your case maybe they linger and only expire with timeout.
try to temporarily uninstall the firewall and simulate lost dsl connectivity to see if the connections are closed immediately then.
you can also reduce read / write timeouts in edit menu->properties->tasks, anyway the timeout error is retriable, it may help as well if you don't find the root cause.

Maybe it's Astraweb?
I've used tcpview & made sure all connections were killed, it still takes a while before I can connect again. I don't have any problems with anything else connecting, I can log into Astraweb with firefox. I just disconnected the PPP session, then reconnected & tried to read a message. no go. I watched UE try to connect in tcpview & watched it get disconnected. I dunno. Any help is greatly appreciated. Just in case, tcpview is a freeware program that lists all local & internet connections & allows you to kill them.
Thanks.
Thanks.
if you have a single task active e.g. downloading headers in a newsgroup and you disconnect ppp the connection is dropped immediately by UE and you see the error tab question sign in task manager to the right of the headers pane becoming red?
there is "connect delay" option in edit menu->properties->servers which, if set, would cause delay before connect, but if you set it then UE wouldn't try to connect in the first place, so it is not that.
i would rather suspect third party firewall and less likely router, basically you need to restart the process to reset something in a firewall driver, if router it doesn't have such close association with a running process. what firewall are you using? can you try to check if it is the cause? from what you tell it seems something goes wrong with the process state on lower level than winsock interface level which UE is only using, it is also unlikely to be the system so we should look at third party.
and again to check whether it is astraweb check it with a single task so you have reserve connections, if you maxed connections and then you are trying to reconnect after dropping ppp, i don't know how astraweb behaves if it thinks the number connections is exceeded.
