Is there a way to export the newsgoups I'm subscribed to?

Post by willko »

Hi all,

I want to clean up my UE installation and was wondering if there's a way to export then import all the newsgroups I'm subscribed to? Just the groups names that is, not the content - I'll re-download all the headers of course.

I've got an issue with UE freezing when I uncheck "Use Nicks" so I thought a fresh install would help but it would be a time saver if I could just import all the groups without resorting to finding and selecting each one. Folders too, come to think of it... Everything else is fairly straight forward (i.e. settings, servers etc etc..) Its just the groups ( 117 in all) I'd like to avoid doing the long way.

Any ideas? :?:

Update - I've copied the settings folder to new install and all groups, folders & settings are there which is great! but,... I also still have the issue with UE freezing when I uncheck "Use Nicks" so I guess that's the actual issue now. Any idea what might be causing this? Its obviously something not right in one of the *.dat files.

Update 2 - OK , with new install its not exactly a terminal freeze, but it takes about 90 seconds for the uncheck "Use Nicks" option to actually occur - does the fact I've got over 100 groups subscribed add some kind of overhead? I thought it primarily applied to server names. This issue arose when I wanted to change from news-europe.giganews.com to news.giganews.com and I was using the nick "Giganews" - so I unchecked the "Use Nicks" first to rename BUT the 90 second freeze also occurs if use the right click on server name -> advanced -> rename option.. so something is taking quite a while to happen... which kinda leads me back to the original question about exporting and importing just the groups I'm subscribed to. Also just to be clear I'm using two servers, astra & giganews - happy to upload any *.dat files if that'd help...?

hope this makes sense... :)

Update3 - I deleted about 70 groups in the new install to test if that would make a difference and it has fixed the issue - "Use Nicks" and renaming servers work instantly - so now I'm wondering is it the number of groups ( 120 down to 50) or was there one (or more) groups that had a problem that were causing the 90 second delay... Anyway - I guess I pretty much sorted now.

I saw this thread - http://www.usenetexplorer.com/forum/vie ... 70&start=0 Sorry to start a new thread when it sounds like a similar issue... Will try reg.dat on its own in new install...

Update4 - OK , I'm going to try a few instances of UE ( http://www.usenetexplorer.com/forum/vie ... nces+of+ue) and compare a virgin unaltered out of the box install to the cut down groups version and my original >100 groups version to get some more info... better get some sleep first though :) I'll be back as they say.... I guess all in all I don't have an issue - just getting to know UE a bit better with a bit of fiddling about and this is a bit of a diary now... :)

Hope every bodies well and flu free

If you still have the settings files with something freezing and you can reduce it to something which you can email me I could check it out.

Also try if you copy map.txt file from the old into the new Newsgroups directory if I remember it right UE may well use the newsgroups from map.txt file or give you the option.
