Great newsfeeds setup but it can be better.

Easynews account
Newsfeeds Unlimited account

Servers:

news.Easynews.com
Max Task: 6
Retries: 3
Connect dealy: 0
Enabled Priority: 1 S
Msg-id direct / Supress get hdrs: unchecked

Unlimited.newsfeeds.com
Max Task: 3
Retries: 3
Connect dealy: 0
Enabled Priority: 128 S
Msg-id direct / Supress get hdrs: unchecked

*.newsfeeds.com (no subnet)
Max Task: 3
Retries: 3
Connect dealy: 0
Enabled Priority: 70 S
Msg-id direct / Supress get hdrs: both checked

Tasks:
Total 20

Easy Task
12
3
10

Hard task:
20
8
3

Gerneral:
standard checkbox options checked and unchecked
Ignore Priorites for maxed servers: checked

Exceeding Download Limit (boolean wildmat match):
download*limit|430*article|400*Many|502*Many|423*Article
Suspend Server for:
10min

Minimize disk accesses on start:
checked

By doing this it allows me to have more then 30 large size groups in one database, auto get header every 90min / watch download filters. without crash for the pass 2 months, while keeping the Database size very small since it only has 2 server headers, makes get new header time / speed blazing fast. if anything not in on the unlmited server it'll try the other servers if not found pause server 10min before going to easynews. every month i have to log on easynews web to use up more then 4 gig of left over credit, might cancel it if i can find a better Header server.

Now to make it better. well there really isn't much more todo with this setup since it wont really matter but i just thought maybe if alex can make a different keyword box for pause per server "Msg-id direct" for 10min then i can still pause 3hours for limit exceed servers. but it really doesn't matter pausing the server 10min or 3hours when it's limit reached or a file isn't found :) just thought i share my setup.

Nice setup, and very smart... What kind of connection do you have and what's your average download bandwith?

I have something similar but without EasyNews. I use my ISP's (OptimumOnline) server and unlimited.newfeeds.com for getting headers (they are on highest priorities) and all other *.newsfeeds for articles (with MsgId and Suppress Headers both checked and on lower priorities). Because I have pretty wide pipe (cable connection) I use 15 tasks for articles and that gives me 850-1000 KB/s average download bandwith. Unless some of goliaths or multimedia servers get clumsy (like these past few weeks) and start causing delays and disturbing optimum flow. Then I just put them on lower priority temporarily. I just hope that newsfeeds will soon stabilize their binaries servers performance, or I might be looking for new provider.

1.5mb i max out 147 to 162.xxx KB/sec 99% of time :)

i think in your case you can just remove the strict on the free isp that way it'll always download if it has headers while unlimited.newsfeeds.com still be the high rank place holder for the *.newsfeeds.com

My fault, I should have been more specific:
---------------------------------------
Servers:
news.optonline.net (my ISP)
Max Task: 2
Retries: 5
Connect delay: 0
Priority: 9 (no Strict)
Msg-id direct / Supress get hdrs: unchecked

unlimited.newsfeeds.com
Max Task: 3
Retries: 5
Connect delay: 0
Priority: 8 Strict
Msg-id direct / Supress get hdrs: unchecked

*.newsfeeds.com (also no subsets)
Max Task: 3
Retries: 5
Connect delay: 0
Priority: 6 to 1 respective, Strict
Msg-id direct / Supress get hdrs: both checked

Tasks:
Total 30
Articles: 15
Posting: 0 (never use them)
Find servers: 0 (never use them)
New Headers: 5
Newsgroups lists: 10
-----------------------------------------

You are right, I use my ISP with no strict so it can "pass" articles down to unlimited.nfc as next in line. Also, my ISP's news server gets new headers even before Newsfeeds does, but retention sucks big time: 48hrs at best. So that's where NFC servers pick up, especially goliaths and multimedias (and unlimited's retention is not so bad either).

Thanks for sharing your setup with us...

How is completion and retention on the Unlimited server? I don't have a need for such high limits, so I can never comment on it when asked. You have suppress headers on the other Newsfeeds servers, do you find you're still getting great completion getting headers only from Unlimited? And how is retention on the server? I imagine it's not near the specialty servers, since they hold only certain groups while Unlimited as them all.

Tha*Lunat!k, you are right. Retention on unlimited server is not great, 7-10 days at most, but completion is pretty decent. I guess Newsfeeds tried to make balance between unlimited downloads from that server and the fact that it covers EVERY group in existence, so they couldn't possibly provide the storage space to maintain the level of retention of goliaths and multimedias, which cover much smaller number of (high volume though) binaries groups.

Personally I am pretty satisfied with the performance of unlimited server, even though it sporadicaly goes bezerk, but that's common for all Newsfeed servers in last two months. I can tell you that download indicator in my NewsPro shows 67561.25M as the amount of data downloaded from that server since 01/13/03 (that's when I performed my last re-organization of newsPro database to match new Newsfeeds servers). So, 67GB in two months from that server alone (and almost 50GB from my ISPs server also) makes VERY DECENT amount of downloads. I can't provide summary of all other NFC servers because they ususaly reach D/L limits and reset their counters (at least goliaths and multuimedias do, for others I don't care anyway...). But then again, my NewsPro is up and running 24/7/365 and I have more then 30 Watch&Save filters active, so my biggest problem is how to sip through and organize amount of new downloads which wait for me when I come home from work every night. But that's a topic for some other post probably :)

Correction, I must have been sleepy last night when I posted my settings.

Both servers which I use for headers (news.optonline.net and unlimited.nfc) are NOT Strict in Priorities, otherwise they would never pass through articles down the line to *.newsfeeds.com servers (which have no headers, used only for articles).

Sorry, my mistake

Could I get a few minutes of your time to walk me through a set up problem that I am having?

Is *.newsfeeds.com a server entry or is this just the way you roll all the specialty servers together?

He's just referring to the entire Newsfeeds server lineup, since they have so many.
