Replies to deleted headers to not show up

Post by Oliver »

Hi,

I sometimes delete old headers to free space and speed up things.
Stangely though, the whole thread gets deleted and not just the header.
Also, new replies withint the thread do not show up anymore. I also tried
to turn of threads in the newsgroup settings. The newsgroup shows
a flat list of postings afterwards, but deleting the header of a topic still deletes all children of the thread.
Is this behaviour correct? Can I turn it off?

Thanks,
Oliver

it is not thread really, if you delete a node in a thread - all replies only to this node are deleted automatically.

the common sense is it is most frequently needed behaviour (otherwise suppose there is a lengthy discussion going on, every day someone posts messages and you would need to delete them one by one or set up a special filter).

it is possible to implement so it will be on per message basis, the problem here is increasing the number of options (several kinds of deleting, indicating what is the delete status of a message in properties, one wouldn't remember).

you can use edit menu->show deleted headers to see such replies, or you can just mark message read instead of deleting it with expectation of further replies, as long as you are interested in the message.

technically the more detailed options are open, but for now it doesn't look attractive (if there would be a universal check box to change the behaviour - it is not a problem to add - i don't think anyone would use it).

if you consider non-interesting messages as a kind of spam which you delete you don't want for the amount of spam to grow exponentially.

ok, I try the 'mark as read' approach. But is there a way to hide the
read messages? I only want to see new postings, even when the header
was set to 'read'.

you can set up an initial/usual filter 'messages are unread', extract.

initial filter is set in the workspace window, newsgroups pane, context menu, you can save the filter with the save button in edit menu->message filter dialog or enter it in edit menu->filter editor and save it from there.

I have a filter that shows only new headers that I use as the initial filter on my text groups. That way I can easily see which articles are new and they disappear from my list after I read them and delete the body.
