Posting problem - am I doing something wrong?

Post by Tipperton »

I tried posting a group of files; had everything setup news groups to post to message title, servers, identity, attachments...

The selection at the bottom of the window was set to "All", but whien I click post, NewsPro only posted the first message.

For now I got around the problem by changing the option to post selected attachments, selected all the attachments, then clicked post. That worked.

So my question: Is this a problem with NewsPro or did I do something wrong?

Thanks!

Never mind...

Unlike when downloading, the task manager only shows one pending task instead of a pending task for each part of the mult-part (partial) messages being posted.

If there is an error it will be indicated in the post dialog (if it is still open - you can close it without affecting the messages being posted) or question sign in post menu->posted messages for the entry.

the error message itself you can see in tasks menu->task manager, the errors pane to the right of the post pane.

indeed it keeps the task in pending until there is something to post, since the pending task 'emits' its messages, it is rather a technical detail.

No problem...

Now that I know it's only going to show 1 pending task which feeds new post tasks as old ones complete, I'm happy with that.

It was just a little confusing, having gotten used to and expecting the same behaviour as when downloading.

Personally I laugh at everyone else trying to get other news reader programs working... They are completely missing the boat by not using NewsPro!

Keep up the great work!

If I stop a posting halfway, cna I get it to start automatically where ever it stopped or do I have to set it to start at that partuclar segment?

you should check what was posted and start at the point where it left, just don't change the encoding and the number of lines per post.

it is easier to repost selected attachments, but you can also repost single parts (there is the combo box in the bottom of the post dialog and menu entries in the posted messages list to do that).

Hi Alex,

I can't seem to make re posting single parts of multipart binaries work.

For example, I post an mp3 with 160 parts, and newsfeeds gives me error 441 post failed, master did not respond on part 130. So I rescan headers for the groups I posted to to check and see what parts made it, and sure enough, part 130 is missing.

So then I reopen my old post, delete the other attachments in the post (the rest of the mp3s from the CD), leaving the one attachment whose part 130 did not make it. Then I choose "Selected Parts" from the combo box as you suggest, press "Post" and a dialog asks me which part, I put 130, then click "OK."

NewsPro does it's thing, and I see the 1 part in the task manager post successfully, no errors.

But the missing part never shows up on the servers

Is this a funky newsfeeds thing, where they don't allow posting of single parts or from the same ID or something? Or am I doing something wrong too?

thanks in advance!

better not to delete any attachments from the list box and not to change encoding and number of lines per post so you can repost correctly (text, headers doesn't matter).

when you repost newspro calculates parts given the current post settings, e.g. if you chose to show file numbers and you post 10 files, suppose it is the third file.

subject [3/10] filename (130/200)

and then you delete everything but this attachment and repost the part you'll get:

subject [1/1] filename (130/200)

likewise, if you change the number of lines in properties->post the offset will be different if the total number of parts somewhere remains the same the post will be corrupted (garbage in the middle).

so it is important not to change these settings if you are going to repost something.

it is not a problem to repost not only the missing parts but a whole attachments or parts starting with some number, duplicate part posts are not a problem as long as they are identical (apart from the message-id, doesn't matter).

Ah I think I understand. By changing the original integrity of the post (deleting other files) I changed the way NewsPro looked for those segments.

So basically, you are saying if I do not alter the contents or settings of the original post, I can repost all files, one file, or one or a series of segments of the files and to the end user it will not appear as a double post or a separate message?

thanks as always for your great support and quick replies!

double post is not a problem (you can repost the same attachment several times without changing the post settings I mentioned above), e.g. if 80% random parts of 200 part attachment didn't come through it is the easiest way to go (instead of enumerating 160 scattered parts), but if you change the settings it may affect the subject line (then it won't be considered by newsreaders as belonging to the same partial message) or the content (in which case the partial becomes with garbage in the reposted parts i.e. corrupted).
