How to get missing parts from another server and no headers

Post by Erik »

Sorry for the bad subject, but there wasnt room for a long description.
must have read:
How to get missing parts from another server without getting all the headers first.

I have 2 payservers now and most the time every file i need is complete.
But the last time they also have problems, so i have a extra server now with 14 days retention :) but i pay per mb :(

Is it possible (i haven't found it yet) or ALEX can you maybe create the following option in Newspro?
If only 22 parts of the 24 parts of the files are on the servers. Newspro marks it as not complete (light and dark green square). What i need is that i can rightclick on that file and have an option "search/try to get missing (2) parts from server xxxx".

offcourse i could get new headers from that server but then i would have to get 400mb on headers first thats very expensive :( and cost lost of time.

you need to have headers from at least one server, then if you define another server(s) as message-id direct in properties->servers and then newspro will try them too even if they don't have the headers (you can set server priorities so it will try them first).

if you don't have headers but know e.g. the subject you can use a xpat (search) group to download headers, you can even get them from one server and use the rest as message-id direct as described above.

Yep but the problem is that i dont have/see the headers (they are not complete)
Someone mentioned this option in another newsreaderprogram, so i thought maybe newspro can get this option too.

I never figured out hwta xpat was or how i worked but via google i found a very good dutch explanation how to xpat within newpro, you should translate that to english :)

And i got it working it wasnt difficult after all.

It isn't possible for a newsreader (even NewsPro) to retrieve an article that it knows nothing about. If you don't have the headers then the reader has no ArticleID Number or Message-ID or anything, so it can't begin retrieving it. Usenet doesn't allow retrieval simply by subject line (you can retrieve headers by subject, but not specific articles).

If you visit http://www.thalunatik.com/NewsPro there is an explanation of XPAT searching for NewsPro (I think it's up to date). A Google search of "XPAT NewsPro" puts my page as the first hit :)

Ok, but if i use "show headers with missing parts" then it knows which parts are missing. With that information it could check if it does exist on server xxxx (xpat?) and you could complete the file without creating an xpat search.
Or do i miss something here?

From a programming standpoint it knows nothing about that article. It could guess upon the subject and author, but it doesn't know the MessageID or Article No or other information. I suppose it could formulate an XPAT search automatically but XPATs can be very slow, and I believe gathering the headers might just be quicker. I think it's best to leave it to the users to perform a further operation such as gathering headers or performing an XPAT search.

The best option is just to have the server with the highest completion level obtain headers, then use MessageID Direct on the other servers. Or if one server is not complete enough then utilize headers from both.

How much are you paying for your pay-per-MB server? Easynews is a great compliment to any service at just $10/month for 6GB/month. The completion and retention are both great and header downloads are not counted toward your limit. This makes it a great solution for gathering headers while not wasting your limit.
