was: the next release... (pre v1.13)

Post by alex »

Known problems:

120 dpi font (it is winxp option in screen settings->advanced), the search service bar is not arranged properly (easy)

User requests:

Esc should reset search service bar edit fields similarly how the button acts in the quick filter (but maybe not to reset days, since I guess it is usually server retention and group filter since if it is not 'all newsgroups' it is less likely one wants to empty it between searches, which would mean the same as switching on 'all newsgroups').

quick filter should work in the search results view

(unrelated) request to switch between post age and post date

also i'm thinking maybe to have an option to mark all headers old and newly imported headers new, then applying or keepeng the "new" filter checked will show the latest imported headers exclusively, also in any case to select them automatically.

and some other issues which were discussed here while i was busy working on server indexing but it will be for later.

As to server work:

as to now no problems reported

maybe smart to display the indexing server searchbar directly and clearly in the view.

Now, one has to more or less install it manually. New trial users might be not so good at this, and lose their interest?
They might not know what to do to get the search working.
Many new trial users would like to try the search, so maybe make it easy?

I heard also some people discussing that 15 days is short for a trial, maybe make this longer?

but you also know that the protection after 15 days is not better than in winrar, it is not newspro :)

the search bar is visible by default on the first launch, the default was "not visible" before but i changed it in the lastest version, it is forced to be visible even with settings from previous versions.

the default server is set right so you just run trial, type something in the search service subject edit box and it will show results right away.

I'll change priority for my work at hand, and try to squeeze the search in the quickstart tutorial this week....

Done the english verison: http://www.binaries4all.com/ue/qs8.php

Used some parts of Alex his helpfile for now.
More pictures to come, but this should give most starters enough info for now.

(and the dutch version also..... lets hope it generates some extra hits ;))

maybe tell on the homepage that the indexing service is free

Post by bassie »

I looked around on internet,

and there is discussion about this indexing service.

People don't know what it will cost, because they are used to paying for everything.
But i cannot find indication of a price on the homepage. If the indexing service is for free for registered users for example, then it might attract more?
Maybe it is written somewhere on the homepage, but it is not clear to me where then.

the issue is not fully clear yet.

i have reasons not to make it a commercial service because i don't want to provide a service, what i'm used to and maybe what i want is to write software. apart from that writing the server took only 2 months of intensive programming work, not enough to make a big deal from it, it cannot be compared even far with writing ue or newspro.

the server application is a relatively small program (if not to take into account the code taken from ue :) ) which can currently handle about 30 day retention of full current binary usenet volume per instance.

it doesn't require sofisticated hardware, only 2GB memory and fast connection, but because communication is so optimized it doesn't consume much bandwidth (most bandwidth is on initial header download).

so i guess it is a question of finding hosting (if i were in some better place i could easily run it myself), what i can provide the software to do the indexing job cheap in terms of performance (currently the server is loaded maybe less than 1%).

maintenance is zero, it is just running since before the last release, at least 72 hours, i don't remember exactly. the database like in ue is fault tolerant.

i'm open to any ideas, just right now my head is still filled with how to finish it from the programming point of view.

I could try to drop the idea at Eweka.
The provide a payserver.

They already sponser a indexing service though, so I don't know whether they are up for it...

Maybey it's better to put this discussion somewhere else?

yes, i want to finish with technical side (a solution to increase retention, improving client interface etc.), during the time i can estimate number of requests, bandwidth needs etc., for now it looks modest, we'll see how it will be later.

ok i'm starting working on the next ue client release right now, then we'll see what to do further with the server.

easier way to select found files for download and save?

Post by bassie »

Maybe handy if after the search i directly can select the files for download and save.

Now it goes to the import section, and there i have to find the files again, and select them again. Looks somewhat double work.

Could be that it is already possible, i will look tonight

Is it possible te enable the quickfilterbar in the results of a server search?

Say I have searched for "Something*else" on the index server.
I get a lot of results, so I would like to filter for "something*else*completely"

The way it is now, I have to do a new search on the index server.

If I could use the filterbar, I could simply filter on "completely", without the need for a new search command to the server.

two stage search is necessary to save on server load and bandwidth.

it will be easier to find the files since i'll add an option to mark all rest of headers old and it will also select newly imported files especially with the new quick or initial filter you'll see only the last imported files.

but it is a good idea to add the rest of options in the context menu, just now it takes them from automatic search service settings which is not quite clever, somehow i missed it is more logical, just the whole indexing work was mostly the server part.

so the import options in the context menu and some other small things will be in the next release tomorrow, then i'll implement filter editor and filters for search views since it is a bit more messy.
