When using XPAT searching, i often do not get the requested headers. I am sure that they are on the server. Does the xpat search only search the recent headers or does it scan through the complete database on the server?
It might be some setting, but i could not find it.

xpat can not find articles
If the articles are on the server, an XPAT should find them. If you haven't tried this, try doing a rescan as well, as indicated on the XPAT dialog, then click the arrow icon up top to show deleted headers.
Are you sure your search string is exactly correct? I like to use an asterisk between words just to ensure no unseen spaces, for example, interfere.

the xpat search is implemented on the server side, newspro just sends your search pattern to the server and displays returned results.
servers accept wildmat patterns ( http://www.netwu.com/newspro/wildmat.htm ), you can give newspro several wildmats separated with | (OR relationship) although newspro will send them to server separatedly.
ensure the search string is a valid one, if it is - this may be a problem with the server (it may not support xpat search at all or have limited or faulty implementation).
