Ah shoot, I was just looking at release notes since 3.1.1 to see if I wanted to just upgrade (seems like latest version trial works)...
and I saw this:

So I'm guessing that's the problem. I guess it's upgrade time.

I guess it's the threaded thing. It seems that import automatically creates groups or threads, and if you read a single article from that thread, it doesn't get filtered unless the whole thread satisfies the criterea. Although 'deleted' works even within the collection, so I can use that.
